Performing a major upgrade of your operating system --------------------------------------------------- Before performing a major upgrade of your operating system (e.g. from Windows XP to Windows Vista), uninstall Sophos Anti-Virus. However, this is not necessary for minor updates such as hotfixes and service packs. Uninstalling Sophos Anti-Virus ------------------------------ After uninstalling Sophos Anti-Virus, perform the following steps to ensure Sophos Anti-Virus is completely removed. The steps refer to use of Registry Editor. Microsoft has issued the following warning with respect to Registry Editor: "If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk." 1. Run Registry Editor, regedit.exe. 2. Sophos recommends that you back up your current registry settings. To do this on Windows XP or later, in the left-hand pane, select "My Computer". On the "File" menu, click "Export", and save the registry file. To do this on Windows 2000, in the left-hand pane, select "My Computer". On the "Registry" menu, click "Export Registry File", and save the registry file. 3. In the left-hand pane, find the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sophos key. If Sophos Anti-Virus is the only Sophos product that was installed, select the "Sophos" key and press 'Delete'. Otherwise, under the "Sophos" key, select the "SAVI" key and press 'Delete'. 4. In the left-hand pane, find the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sophos key. If Sophos Anti-Virus is the only Sophos product that was installed, select the "Sophos" key and press 'Delete'. Otherwise, under the "Sophos" key, select the "Sophos Anti-Virus" key and press 'Delete'. If it is not there, you don't need to take any action. 5. Close Registry Editor. 6. Reboot the computer to completely remove Sophos Anti-Virus drivers from the computer. Windows might keep some files (e.g. savonaccesscontrol.sys and savonaccessfilter.sys) to support the "Last known good boot" option.
