MailMonitor for SMTP (Windows NT/2000) Release Notes ---------------------------------------------------- Version 1.2.2, January 2003 www.sophos.com Introduction ------------ These release notes describe the installation of MailMonitor for SMTP (Windows NT/2000). For information on how to use the product please consult the User Manual. This document is supplied in PDF format and is available for download from the Sophos website at http://www.sophos.com/support/docs/#smtp New in this version ------------------- This release includes the following new features: * Improved scanning of malformed mail messages * Options to perform multiple scans of emails for additional security. These options are 'double_scan' and 'mime_rescanning' in the [scanning] section of the configuration file. See the MailMonitor for SMTP user manual before enabling this feature. * Fix for a reported error in the process by which the contents of the log file are archived each time the file is full. Installing MailMonitor for SMTP ------------------------------- MailMonitor for SMTP requires SAV Interface, which is provided by Sophos Anti- Virus for Windows NT/2000. Please install Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows NT/2000 on the server before attempting the installation of MailMonitor for SMTP. Once Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows NT/2000 is installed, run the MailMonitor for SMTP setup program and follow the on-screen instructions. NOTE: The SMTP components must be installed under a Windows NT/2000 user account with administrative rights. After installation, you must ensure that: * Access control (access database) is enabled and configured if you wish to use MailMonitor access control. The user manual contains instructions for configuring access control. (By default, access control is disabled). NOTE: Alternatively, MailMonitor may be placed behind a gateway SMTP server, with the gateway server configured to provide the necessary level of protection. MailMonitor can then be set to accept mail only from the gateway server and pass processed mail onto a delivery server for transmission to recipients. This access control scheme is recommended should you require a greater level of protection against 3rd party mailers than can be provided by MailMonitor. * Mail is directed to the scanner server, i.e. the machine where MailMonitor for SMTP is running, rather than to the SMTP mail server. * Security settings are modified so that only the MailMonitor for SMTP can access the SMTP server port.
