Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X release notes

Version numbers

Component Version
Sophos Anti-Virus 7.1.0
Threat detection engine 3.00.1
Threat data 4.46, October 2009

New in this version

  • The user interface has been reorganized. Sophos Anti-Virus preferences have been moved from System Preferences to a new window, which can be opened from the Sophos Anti-Virus application menu. The new window also includes preferences for the default scan of this Mac and Finder item scans, which were previously accessed by clicking Configure Scan in the main Sophos Anti-Virus window. The Help has been updated to reflect this change.
  • The changes to preferences include changes to logging. On-access scanning and updating activity is now logged in a single file. For more information, see Additional information.

  • As a result of the changes to preferences, the following problem is fixed:

(DEF 29391) On Mac OS X versions 10.4 and 10.5 on Power PC and version 10.5 on Intel, if you install Sophos Anti-Virus while System Preferences is open, you cannot access the Sophos Anti-Virus preferences. To workaround this, you must re-install Sophos Anti-Virus.

  • (DEF 47624) This version includes a fix for a problem with the Remote Management System and AutoUpdate. Previously, these components were unable to start on any Mac with a G3 processor.
  • When you specify the server from which Sophos Anti-Virus will be updated, you can now use an account with a blank password. You might want to do this if you are using a guest account.
  • The threat detection engine and threat data have been updated.

Known problems

  • (DEF 47186) On Mac OS X versions 10.4 and 10.5, if you click the Sophos Anti-Virus icon on the right-hand side of the menu bar, and then choose Scan This Mac from the shortcut menu, in certain cases, either nothing happens or the Choose Application dialog appears. For more information including a workaround, see http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/62390.html.
  • (DEF 35773) On Mac OS X Server version 10.4 with a non-UTF-8 filesystem on Intel, if an infected file contains non-ASCII characters in its filename, in some cases Sophos Anti-Virus:
    • Cannot delete the file
    • Can copy the file to another folder to prevent it being run but does not delete the original
  • On OS X 10.4, if the immediate scanner moves or copies an infected file to a quarantine folder, the action is intercepted by the on-access scanner. This is because Spotlight indexes the quarantine folder when a file is quarantined there. To work around this, in the Spotlight preferences, put the quarantine folder into the list of excluded folders.
  • If you make any of the following configuration changes in the Sophos Anti-Virus updating preferences pages, they do not trigger a differs from policy alert in Sophos Enterprise Console:
    • Disable updating from a secondary location.
    • Set the primary or secondary proxy to either Use system proxy settings or Do not use proxy.

Additional information

  • On-access scanning and updating activity is now logged in a single file, whose default path is:

    /Library/Logs/Sophos Anti-Virus.log

Previously, on-access scanning and updating activity were logged in separate files, whose default paths were:

    /Library/Logs/Sophos Anti-Virus Log.txt

    /Library/Logs/Sophos AutoUpdate Log.txt

When you update Sophos Anti-Virus to this version, your logging preferences are migrated as follows:

    • If both the old logs were left in their default folder, the new log will be created in the same default folder.
    • If both the old logs were configured to be in the same non-default folder, the new log will be created in the same non-default folder.
    • If only one of the old logs was configured to be in a non-default folder, the new log will be created in the same non-default folder.
    • If both the old logs were configured to be in different, non-default folders, the new log will be created in the same folder as Sophos Anti-Virus Log.txt.
  • The Scan with Sophos Anti-Virus command is not contained in a Finder shortcut menu immediately after you install Sophos Anti-Virus until you log in to your Mac again.
  • The Scan with Sophos Anti-Virus command is still present in a Finder shortcut menu immediately after you uninstall Sophos Anti-Virus until you log in to your Mac again.
  • In Sophos Enterprise Console and Sophos Control Center, you can set up email alerting for Virus alerts, Scanning errors or Other errors. Mac OS X computers do not support the Scanning errors option and therefore do not send these alerts.

Information from previous versions

7.0.5

  • Sophos Anti-Virus supports Mac OS X version 10.6, in addition to versions 10.4 and 10.5. However, the Sophos Anti-Virus preferences run only in 32-bit mode.
  • You can copy a custom scan. This feature enables you to easily create a scan that contains a scan list or configuration that is similar to an existing scan.
  • On Mac OS X version 10.6, you can run a Finder item scan from the Services submenu.
  • This version includes fixes for the following problems:

(DEF 41879) If you disable on-access scanning while Sophos Anti-Virus is scanning a large file, the computer can stop responding to user input for a long time.

(DEF 40522) If you run a default scan of the Mac, only the four most significant digits of the error count are displayed.

7.0.3

  • This version includes fixes for the following problems:

(DEF 37866) Email notifications that report errors are in English, regardless of the Sophos Anti-Virus language version.

(DEF 37342) In the non-English Sophos Anti-Virus Help, the link to the home page does not work.

(DEF 37343) In the non-English Sophos Update Manager Help, the link to the home page does not work.

(DEF 38237) In Sophos Update Manager on a Japanese version of Mac OS X, the characters in the User Name fields are replaced with ¥ characters until the user has been authenticated.
