Known problems

The description of some problems includes an identifier in brackets, for example "(DEF 22335)". You can use this identifier if you need to contact Sophos technical support about the problem in question.

  • (DEF 65091) Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint fails to install on Windows Server 2008 (including R2) if the Windows Firewall service is disabled.
  • (DEF 68462) If you try to install Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint on a computer that uses a remote mirrored SQL server database, then the installer might give an error message "An error occurred while extracting the administration group from the selected configuration group."

This is because the computer has an older SQL driver than what is required for SQL mirroring.

To workaround this issue, exit the Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint installer, install the SQL native client from the installer's resources folder and restart the Sophos for SharePoint installation. For information see Sophos support knowledgebase article 113076.

  • If you have Microsoft Forefront Security for SharePoint installed, you must uninstall Forefront before installing Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint.
  • (WKI 37430, DEF 37844) If User Access Control is enabled on Windows Server 2008, and the installing user is not the Administrator account, then the installation wizard displays the following message on the Service Credentials page when the Next button is clicked:

Setup was unable to access Microsoft SharePoint using the specified account.

To resolve this issue, see Sophos support knowledgebase article 58415.

  • (DEF 38212) If you upgrade Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 from SP1 to SP2 with Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint installed, you may not be able to select subfolders of the SharePoint documents folder for scanning. To work around this, restart the Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint services after upgrading.
  • (WKI 38042) When upgrading Windows SharePoint Services (WSS), you must disable on-access scanning before running the SharePoint configuration wizard.
  • (DEF 30965) Microsoft Outlook may automatically remove some of the line breaks when viewing email alerts generated by Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint.
  • The installer may fail with an error "Setup was unable to create the Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint databases".
This can happen if, in the past, you have uninstalled the SOPHOS database instance from Microsoft SQL Server or uninstalled Microsoft SQL Server itself. In this case, delete the following files from the MS_SQL_INSTALL_FOLDER\MSSQL.X\MSSQL\Data folder.
    • SavSpCnfg.mdf

    • SavSpCnfg_log.ldf
    • SavSpLog.mdf
    • SavSpLog_log.ldf
    • SavSpQuar.mdf
    • SavSpQuar_log.ldf
    • SavSpRprt.mdf
    • SavSpRprt_log.ldf
  • During installation, you can specify the Microsoft SQL Server you want to use. If you click 'Browse' to browse to the server, the browser window may not list the Microsoft SQL Server database instance that you wish to select. In this case, type the database name into the text box provided, in the format MACHINENAME\INSTANCENAME, e.g. MYDBSERVER\SOPHOS.
  • During installation, when you specify the Microsoft SQL Server, the installer may fail to connect to the chosen Microsoft SQL Server database instance. In this case, you should:
    • Ensure that the instance name is correct and that you have administrative privileges on the SQL server.
    • If you are using a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or 2008 database located on a different computer (a remote database), use the Microsoft SQL Server Configuration Manager to enable the TCP/IP protocol for the database instance and start the SQL Server Browser service.
  • During installation if you choose a database that is located on a different computer (that is, remote database) in a workgroup, or choose a database that is in a different domain then the installer will fail to set the necessary access rights on the database and display the following error message:

Setup was unable to configure the access permissions on SQL Server instance MACHINENAME\INSTANCENAME for user DOMAIN\USERNAME

The installation program will then proceed but after installation the product may not have access to the chosen database. In this case, contact Sophos technical support for a workaround.

Additional information

  • During installation, the installer will restart IIS. Under certain circumstances it may also require the computer to be restarted.
  • During installation, you may notice a few errors in the Event log as described below.

These errors are reported when Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint installer attempts to detect the presence of Visual C++ redistributables. These errors can be ignored safely.
